Paris, Sunday morning. Take the métro on line 7 to Place Monge. Walk up the escalator into the hazy morning sunlight and turn immediately right into the buzz of food shoppers. Stop a while to snack on foie gras and be persuaded into a glass of Sauternes - it's a little early, but hey.

Take away a small tin of the foie gras to save for a special occasion and wander on into the amazing array of fruit and vegetables. Marvel at the displays and puzzle over why France does this better than anywhere else.

Realise you've lagged way behind your friends and jog a little to catch up, then stop again because you've been pining for Brebis for months and there some is, all bright and white. You can't stop at the cheese and take two yoghurts as well (these will be good with the apple puree you bought last night at Lafayette Gourmet).

Spend a little longer staring at the produce you'd like to take home but know you can't fit into the Eurostar and then walk down the hill, turning right into la rue du Puits de l'Ermite. Spend a few minutes looking up at the apartment where your friend Siobhan used to live before heading on down the road towards lunch at the Mosquée de Paris.

It's been too long since we last went to Paris and now I'm craving a proper croissant and mint tea at the mosque...
